Review | Potions and Pawprints by Fleur DeVillainy

From author Fleur DeVillainy, author of Spellbound Scones and Sky of Thorns comes a new fall romance full of laughter, magic, and pumpkin spice lattes.

Illustration of a romantic couple in front of a decorated house with pumpkins, featuring the title 'Potions and Paw Prints' and the author's name Fleur Devilainy.

For Evie Hawthorne, Halloween is the busiest season of the year. Guests are piling into her family’s haunted bed-and-breakfast, her aunts are up to their usual matchmaking tricks, and the resident ghosts are feeling extra mischievous. The last thing she needs is romance.

But when a rugged jaguar shifter checks in and accidentally gets mistaken for her boyfriend, Evie seizes the chance to silence the gossip. All they have to do is fake a relationship until Halloween passes—but nothing in Moon Hollow ever goes according to plan.

Between midnight ghost hunts, enchanted pumpkin patches, and one too many “pretend” kisses, Evie and Liam find themselves caught in a whirlwind of autumn magic. And as Halloween draws near, they’ll have to decide if their love story is only for show… or the beginning of something truly magical.

Potions and Paw Prints is a standalone novella in The Witches of Pumpkin Hollow, an autumn-inspired series of interconnected paranormal romances. Each book centers on a different witch living in the same magical small town, with every story written by a different author, bringing together a coven of voices to tell tales of love, magic, and pumpkin-spiced mischief.

A cozy supernatural town with the annual pumpkin festival, a jaguar shifter detective, a witch running a B&B and a mystery where family heirlooms are getting stolen. Fleur DeVillainy really has a talent for these quick and cozy paranormal romances and I’m eating them up. I really enjoyed Liam and Evie as characters and though this is a novella, their personalities were very defined and clear. I did find myself wanting a bit more from some side characters such as her aunts but absolutely loved the ghosts and their interactions with Evie and Liam. This was perfect for the fall/Halloween season and I will definitely be checking out the other novellas in the series.

Happy reading!

Review | Hexy Beast by Avery Flynn

An impulsive witch and a buttoned-up werewolf discover love is its own beast in this spicy rom-com from USA Today bestselling author Avery Flynn.

Book cover of 'Hexy Beast' by Avery Flynn, featuring a man on a motorcycle and a woman sitting behind him, with a whimsical night sky background.

As the eldest daughter of the magical Sherwood family, I’m supposed to have everything together. Well, joke’s on them—I, Effie Sherwood, am chaos incarnate, and you’ll never be able to guess my next move.

Like jumping on the back of Darius Aetos’ motorcycle. Not only is Darius grumpy, gruff, and hot, he’s also the head of the Aetos werewolf pack.

My spur of the moment decision has quickly become a much bigger commitment, because a pack elder is convinced this hunk of a man (or wolf, depending on the hour) is my fated mate.

Even though I’m a witch and he’s a werewolf, we’re stuck together until we can find our way out of the tricky pack politics. But under the light of the blue moon, it’s almost starting to feel like Darius doesn’t want to stay away from me. And I’m not sure if it’s my magic going haywire or the starlit skies, but I can’t imagine leaving his arms either.

Stylized text that says 'Review' in turquoise, accompanied by a cute cat illustration and a stack of books.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This was my first experience with Avery Flynn’s writing and I have to say, I will be picking up more. I spent so much of this book laughing at the banter between Effie and Darius as they went from enemies to loves and discovered that even though they didn’t believe in fated mates, that kinda didn’t matter. There are definitely some shenanigans between the two of them, and moderate to high stakes, but what really shone in this story was them getting to know each other beyond what they knew of each other previously. Effie is used to being perceived a certain way and definitely has some baggage due to being the eldest child but not the heir of her family’s magic as she was supposed to be and I was glad to see some exploration of her emotions behind that and her acknowledging how that contributes to her actions. We even get to see Darius work through some of his insecurities and fears throughout the process.

I had a lot of fun reading this one, it was funny, spicy and gave me a great glimpse of the world that Flynn has created in this series. The writing style flowed so easily and it made the story a super quick read that I couldn’t get enough of.

Hexy Beast is out today, so check it out as well as the first two books in the series! Thank you to Berkley for the digital arc through Netgalley.

Happy reading!

Review | Hart & Souls by Amy J. Elliott

Love never dies, and neither does he, in this second chance romance with a ghostly twist.

Ruby Hart used to believe in happily ever afters. It’s why she runs the Big Tippers and Bodice Rippers book club at the library where she works. But after calling off her engagement six months ago, romance feels more like fiction than fact.

So color Ruby surprised when she gets a call from her ex-fiancé’s phone, only to learn Oliver Blackwood has died in an accident. Or so she thinks, until she comes home to find Ollie’s ghost waiting for her.

Turns out Ruby is a Navigator, part of a long line of Hart women destined to guide souls to the beyond. But when she touches Ollie, he doesn’t move on. Because while he’s dead…he’s also sort of not.

Ollie did betray Ruby, but not the way she thinks. When he was alive, he hunted the undead, tracking a spreading infection that could become an epidemic. Now he is the undead, and he’s tethered to Ruby until they find his zombie body and the creature that bit him, laying them both to rest.

Living with your ex’s ghost 24/7 makes it hard to hold a grudge, and Ruby quickly realizes she might not be as over Ollie as she thought. But if they succeed, Ollie will finally cross over…and Ruby will lose him for good.

For a librarian who wants to believe in happily ever afters again, it may be the ultimate heartbreak.

Amazon | Goodreads

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I’m definitely on a paranormal romance kick lately and this one definitely fit the bill. In it we follow Ruby, who has had a bit of a rough time, what with breaking up with her fiancé – when she receives word that he’s actually died. She soon finds out though that things are not that cut and dry, considering she goes home to find Ollie in her house…less corporeal, but there. Thus started their journey to figure out what was going on, while also coming to grips with what that means for them and their relationship. There’s a lot of heartbreak, humor and hijinks so it was a very enjoyable read. There are a lot of things along the way that Ruby and Ollie learn about each other, some resolving of miscommunication, but also some further miscommunication that they need to figure out. The relationships between Ruby, her cousin, mother and aunt are also wonderful to read about and set a good foundation for where the series may go (excited to see that the 2nd book is about Sloane!).

While this is a fun read, and definitely fits that cozy paranormal romance box, there’s also a lot of real trauma and baggage that Ruby especially has to work through – be warned death of a parent and the grief associated is discussed – but the way Ruby processes and comes to terms with that is beautifully done.

It still remains to be seen if the Hart women are truly cursed or not, so maybe that question will be answered in the future!

Review | Sunscreen and Spellbooks by Fleur DeVillainy

From author Fleur DeVillainy, author of Spellbound Scones and Sky of Thorns comes a new summer romance that will leave you laughing, swooning and flushed.

Welcome to Crescent Cove—where the sun shines, secrets linger, and every tide brings a little magic.

Catherine Prescott doesn’t believe in magic. Not anymore. Once a prodigy witch, now a burnt-out marketing exec, she’s traded spells for spreadsheets—until a sudden layoff leaves her with nothing but severance pay and an invitation to housesit her aunt’s beach cottage in Crescent Cove.

Her summer plans? Sunscreen, solitude, and maybe a little self-discovery.
Reality? A mischievous dog, a house full of enchanted junk, and a maddeningly handsome marine biologist who insists she’s “disrupting leyline energy.”

Elliot Fitzgerald is sunshine in human form—tanned, barefoot, and entirely too charming. He’s also a sea lion shifter sworn to protect the cove’s magic. When Cat accidentally stirs dormant power beneath the waves, he offers to teach her how to control it… if she agrees to stay close.

Now they’re fake-dating to throw off nosy locals, knee-deep in magical chaos, and discovering that the ocean isn’t the only thing with dangerous pull.

Witty, witchy, and warm as a summer sunset— Sunscreen and Spellbooks is a beachy paranormal rom-com about rediscovering your magic, finding where you belong, and falling in love under the tide.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Having read some of Fleur’s writing before, I was excited to pick this one up (and definitely will be reading some of the other installments in the Crescent Cove series). If you’re looking for a summery paranormal read, this one fits the bill. We follow Catherine and Elliot. Catherine has just lost her job and is a bit adrift, when her aunt asks if she watch her dog for her while she goes on a trip – since she’s lost her job she decides to pack up her life and go back to her small town to do so. Elliot is a sea lion shifter who’s happy in his life working at an animal rescue, but also acknowledges that there’s something missing.

Hilarity ensues as the magic Catherine has tried to shut away and leave behind starts going haywire, especially when Elliot is around. She’s constantly telling herself she’s leaving at the end of summer, so that adds a bit of yearning to the mix. Their relationship as it grows is great to watch, and there’s some further depth as she finally starts to deal with the loneliness and grief that she’s been trying to ignore. She definitely has a ton of growth as a character and the story has a great arc.

Sunscreen and Spellbooks is available now, and on Kindle Unlimited!

Review | Stalking Not Required by Corina Bair

Sunshine demon meets antisocial star-chaser destined to go insane… What could possibly go wrong?

Foras ‘Ro’ Cromwell is a demon who yearns to be a good person, hence the reason he’s currently in therapy. Unfortunately, his demonic urges include setting dumpsters on fire when he’s overwhelmed, stealing items that have no relevance to him, and a surprising new stalking.

He’s only interested in stalking one person, though. The elusive woman with shimmering silver hair.

Alorra Seren is a star-chaser. A dangerous truth she planned on taking to her grave, if only she didn’t excel at making terrible decisions. She’s as prickly as she is mysterious, and Ro wants nothing more than to uncover all of her secrets.

When Lor is blackmailed by people who want to use her for her abilities, Ro takes matters into his own fiery hands, landing himself in a heap of trouble. Now Lor has to decide between risking it all to save him, or protecting her secrets to save herself.

Sparks fly in this banter-filled paranormal romcom featuring a black cat FMC and golden retriever MMC, idiots to lovers, and bi4bi love in a queer-normative world. Mental health concerns and generational trauma play a significant role in this novel, and although there are emotional moments, it is overall light-hearted and fun with no third act breakup.

Amazon | Goodreads

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Ro is a sunshine-y fire demon fighting his impulses and trying to be good person. Lor is a star-chaser in a tough spot who is determined not to form attachments because of the fate she believes awaits her as she gets older. Ro is immediately obsessed and determined to win Lor over, even it it means indulging his demonic side a little and stalking her (to figure her out and keep her safe in his mind).

Corina has done it again, the first book in the Chaotic Paranormals series, Love (Literally) Bites was a favorite earlier this year so this was definitely highly anticipated by me and it did not disappoint. I loved both Ro and Lor (to be fair it’s hard not to love Ro and his golden retriever tendencies). Though Ro is working on himself and trying to be a good person despite being a fire demon, Lor is beautifully complex and really grows the most over the story. Her concerns and the walls she has up regarding relationships and emotions are understandable, and it’s such a journey to see her working on them as she gets closer to Ro and he gets behind those walls.

Beautifully told, full of humor, a smattering of danger and plenty of spice, it’s a fantastic read.

Note: while this is the second book in the series, it can be read without reading the first book; however, I do recommend reading them in order because of an easter egg that occurs.

Stalking Not Required comes out May 5th, make sure to pick a copy of both it and Love (Literally) Bites!

Review | Love (Literally) Bites by Corina Bair

Nothing sucks more than being sent on a work trip with a (probably) murderous vampire when you’re a chaotic shifter whose life is falling apart.

Once called a freak for her inability to shift, Raya Merritt is now transforming at the worst moments. Rabbit ears mid-presentation? Check. Mouse whiskers in the pool? Yep. Cheetah spots while making out? Sure, why not? After a year of increasing turmoil–and with another full moon approaching–Raya is scrambling to make the most of a shifty situation.

Asher Sullivan is perfectly content. He has a quiet home, a blood bank down the street, and a steady income. He goes to work and comes home–no mayhem, no surprises–just the way he designed it.
Until a relentlessly cheerful shifter shows up in his office and upends it all.

When Raya and Asher are accidentally double-booked into the same hotel room, Raya is determined not to let her inner animal run wild and ruin her career. Against his wishes, Asher’s fangs ache to taste her, while Raya’s shifter side purrs for him and no one else.

Little do they know, more than their jobs are on the line, and they’ll need each other to make it through.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

I absolutely devoured this book once I got into it. I really enjoyed the characters, obviously Raya and Asher, but so many of the supporting characters were given clear identities and personalities. I dare anyone not to be charmed by Reverie. I really enjoyed the story progression, though I was worried that perhaps things were moving too fast, but by the end the pacing worked out really well. If you want a story that has a great mix of spice, dynamic scenes and will make you giggle and kick your feet this is definitely one you should pick up. We get both Raya and Asher’s POVs and it makes it even better when we see the moments that they are growing together. Asher is the perfect grumpy to counter Raya’s sunshine and they definitely bring out the best in each other. I can’t wait to get the change to pick up more by this author!

Love (Literally) Bites is out now! Make sure to pick up a copy (and it’s available on KU!).

Review | The Ghost Hunter Next Door by Danielle Garrett

The first rule of being a ghost whisperer: Don’t tell anyone.

Seriously. Don’t.

Sure, it might sound harmless. A fun party trick, even. I assure you, it’s not.

How do I know? Well, let’s just say that I’ve had a lot of experience with this sort of thing, and nine times out of ten, it turns into an all-consuming disaster.

Being plagued by needy ghosts twenty-four/seven is one thing; being harassed by a horde of curious — or worse, grieving — flesh-and-blood people is an entirely different circus. I mean really, who wants to hold an impromptu séance in the middle of the cereal aisle? Not me, and the manager of the grocery store probably isn’t too crazy about the idea, either.

So, that’s it. If you’re a ghost whisperer, just keep your mouth shut and act normal. Ghosts? What ghosts?

Now, if only I would start listening to my own advice …

Rating: 4 out of 5.

When I picked this up I was looking for something light, paranormal and that would make me laugh. I had seen a few of Danielle Garrett’s titles pop up in recommendations, so I thought I would check one out. It definitely fit the bill and I had a thoroughly fun time with it. It was a good take on a bit of a cozy mystery, only it didn’t feature a current murder they were trying to solve…but the details of how a certain ghost died in order to help the living with their ‘ghost dilemma’ and keep the ghost from wreaking havoc. This was made a little more complicated by the fact that most don’t know about Scarlet’s abilities. The characters (especially the ghosts) are charming – after all, who wouldn’t want to hear the opinions of their childhood cat in ghost form? Scarlet has depth and her struggles with balancing her up and coming business, relationships and keeping her secret while helping the local ghosts was a great read.

Review | Bridge of Souls by Victoria Schwab

Where there are ghosts, Cassidy Blake follows … unless it’s the other way around?

Cass thinks she might have this ghost-hunting thing down. After all, she and her ghost best friend, Jacob, have survived two haunted cities while travelling for her parents’ TV show.

But nothing can prepare Cass for New Orleans, which wears all of its hauntings on its sleeve. In a city of ghost tours and tombs, raucous music and all kinds of magic, Cass could get lost in all the colourful, grisly local legends. And the city’s biggest surprise is a foe Cass never expected to face: a servant of Death itself.

Cass takes on her most dangerous challenge yet…

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I’m so glad I finally picked up the conclusion to the Cassidy Blake trilogy and a little upset I waited so long. I don’t want to delve into too much since it is the last book of the trilogy, but I really enjoyed how Cassidy seemed to grow up a little in this book, she was more open to recognizing things about herself. I think New Orleans as a setting was perfect, though I think my favorite setting of the three was Paris overall, and felt like the locations they selected for the TV show to highlight were very appropriate. All in all it was a really solid conclusion and I was more than satisfied with where the characters were left at the end.

Review | The Folcroft Ghosts by Darcy Coates

Tara and her brother Kyle are sent to stay with their estranged grandparents when their mother is hospitalised. May and Peter Folcroft seem warm and charming at first, and the house, hidden in the base of the mountains, is idyllic.

But strange things keep happening.

The swing moves on its own. Peter paces around the house late at night. Doors slam and curtains shift when no one is inside. Tara begins to suspect the old house is haunted.

When a storm cuts the phone line, May shifts from doting to obsessive. Tara and Kyle must try to keep up the pretext of a happy family, but an empty journal and locked room provide clues to the unforgivable lies, secrets and decades-old murders entwined with the Folcrofts’ history.

And the ghosts are growing restless…

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Having enjoyed one of Darcy Coates’ other books I was excited to give this a read. It definitely had some interesting concepts to it and the last 20% was really the best part of the book as things started unraveling and the truths started coming out. It was a good read, but the pacing for the first 2/3 of the book were a little slow. I liked Tara and Kyle’s relationship and interactions and that really made the book for me. It was an enjoyable story, with lots of questions as to whether it was paranormal or not.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Since I got to read the spin off of this series I wanted to go back and read the original series and I was not disappointed in this first volume. I really enjoyed the manga style art, which of course made the story race right by. After reading the first volume I’m still somewhat learning who certain characters are, but they are being revealed bit by bit as the story progresses. I immediately was sucked into the world and can’t wait to learn more about the characters and the little snippets of mystery we were allowed to see in this first volume.

If you have kindle unlimited this series is currently available on it – happy reading!
