Writing Update | 3/19

Hey everyone! I know I talked about the upcoming session of Camp NaNoWriMo not too long ago on here, but the closer we get the more excited I am about it. I guess I’m just in that space where I’m ready to write but haven’t really had the time to do it – so Camp will give me the push I need to do it.

I have been making minor edits and changes to some things, cleaning them up a bit – but my writing style is very fluid. While I often have an idea of specific scenes, plot movement and more, all of those things can actually change when I do dig into actually writing. If I feel the way I had originally plotted something doesn’t sit right, then I change it.

I guess all that is to say that I really want to dive into it again – but more and more I am pretty sure I am just going to work on something fresh and new that I don’t have a ton of notes or plotted scenes for. I feel like just doing spur of the moment writing will help get my muse settled back into its place. This may be seen as me avoiding the stories that are farther along, but to be honest I need to let them sit a bit since there is some writer’s block going on with some of them. Sometimes they just need to be by themselves for a little while and think about what they’ve done – haha.

Who else is planning on doing Camp? Happy writing!

Writing Update | March

Hey everyone! It’s already nearly mid-march and I feel like the first few months of this year have gone by incredibly fast. Soon we’ll be planting gardens, spending more time outside, opening up the windows and more. It also means that April is almost upon us which means another round of Camp NaNoWriMo.

I’m not completely sure just yet what I will be working on, but I do have a couple projects that are still in very young stages that I may decide to work on. It might be nice to work on something completely new and fresh, so I will likely go that route.

I do still have a number of projects that are in different stages of progress, but I feel like if I work on one that I’ve got a fair bit done on it might slow my progress down. That thinking is what is really making me want to start fresh with one of my newer ideas and just how much I can get done in the month of April.

I don’t know yet if I want to have a certain amount of words accomplished, but I do know I am going to try and make a goal of writing something every day of the month, even if it’s not much.

What are everyone’s plans for Camp NaNoWriMo? Are you planning on participating?

Happy writing!

Writing Update | January

So…I know I’ve been pretty quiet for the last month or so regarding my writing – and honestly I was just letting myself take a little break. The last few months have been stressful everywhere, but certain things have definitely affected my mental health and such. In that time I have been reading a ton, but not necessarily writing.

I have opened some of my WIPs and read through them, have done some editing and have also spent time thinking through the plotlines of a couple of them. But actual writing? That hasn’t happened…and I’m perfectly ok with that.

Sometimes you need a break, especially when things in your life are a little topsy turvy. Plus, it’s always good to take a mental health break from things if you need to.

I definitely plan on doing Camp NaNoWriMo in April, but before that I’m not sure if there will be a ton of updates on the writing front. Who knows? We’ll see how my self care goes and if inspiration strikes me then I will definitely act on it.

How’s everyone else’s writing going so far this year?

Happy writing!

2021 Writing Goals

I know I already posted about my overall goals for 2021 but I wanted to get a little more specific with my writing goals. These will of course be fluid since I’m not going to force myself to write if I’m not feeling it – that never ends up well. So here are just a few more specific goals.

Finish something – I have so many half finished stories, or even some that are near completion, but nothing really finished. This coming year I would really like to finish at least one of them and be able to put it to rest.

NaNoWriMo – This year was the first year I participated in the two Camp NaNoWriMo sessions in April and July and while I didn’t necessarily get a ton done, I enjoyed the process. I spent some time editing and proofing, but for me I came at it with a more relaxed approach. I would like to be able to participate in them again next year (and NaNo in November of course).

Start Something New – Now with so many unfinished things you may be asking why I would want to start something new – but hear me out. I would like to explore a genre that I don’t typically write in and see how it flows. A lot of my stuff is paranormal and fantasy based and I would really like to challenge myself to write outside of my comfort zone.

Do you have any specific writing goals?

Happy writing!

NaNoWriMo 2020 | Last Day

Can you believe it is already November 30th? This month has flown by, which is both a good and bad thing when you think about it. With that said…I have something to share with you all.

That’s right, I did it. I feel like last year’s curse has ended, as have those I suffered through both sessions of Camp NaNoWriMo. I hit 50k way too late (too early?) but once I noticed I was within 1000 words of goal last night I couldn’t stop.

My story isn’t done, but it’s close – still I’m so happy that I managed to win this year. How’s everyone else doing? Where I am there are still a little over four hours left in the day – are you still heading towards goal?

Happy writing!

NaNoWriMo | Final Push

Well everyone, here we are – the last three days of #NaNoWriMo! While there are a lot of people who have already hit 50k, for some of us this is the final push.

As of right now I’m sitting at 45,729 and plan on having another writing session tonight. I’m hoping that I might be able to hit 50k tonight if I really get going – but if not would like to hit it tomorrow. That way the last day can be mostly relaxed – even though I know I will write something just so I can get that “write every day” badge.

This year’s NaNoWriMo has definitely gone better than last year even though I’ve had to be kind to myself on the days I could only write a few hundred words because there simply wasn’t time in my days. Still, I’m super excited to be close to goal and actually completing this year. In a year of difficulties this at least has gone well.

How is everyone else doing? Are you going to win this year?

Happy writing!

NaNoWriMo | Halfway Point!

Well everyone, it’s the 16th so we have officially reached the halfway point of NaNoWriMo! How are your totals doing? Are you completely pantsing it, or did you have plans in place?

I’m still happy with my progress, I haven’t written anything today but right now I’m sitting at 23,603 words. I’m slightly behind target, but I’m hoping for a decent writing session tonight and trying to get caught up with projected totals.

I’m still totally okay with how things are progressing. I had hoped to write more this weekend but adult things took over and I didn’t have as much time as I had hoped – plus when I did have time I just wasn’t feeling it, and that’s ok. I know if I try to force it I won’t be able to write at all.

All signs still point to me being able to reach 50k this month, so fingers are crossed!

Happy writing!

NaNoWriMo 2020 | Week Two Update

So here we are, almost two weeks into NaNoWriMo and I have to say I am happy with how it is going. I am below target right now, but I’m not bothered by it. My initial plan for this round was to write what I can during my work week, but not kill myself trying to hit the goal every single day. I figured I could catch up and get on par during the weekend.

So far that plan has gone as expected. I’ve made sure that I write at least something each day, but I used my time off on the weekend to get myself on target heading back into the work week. I haven’t felt the best this week, so I’m glad I haven’t forced myself to write more than I’ve felt like writing.

As of this writing I’m sitting at 15,356 words and I am perfectly happy with that total. I’ve added something every single day and anticipate holding my plan through the month.

Making the decision to not push myself extra hard through the work week was definitely the right decision as I’m not nearly as stressed as I have been in the past and the writing is flowing pretty well.

How is everyone else doing?

Happy writing!

NaNoWriMo | Finding Time

We’re three days into NaNo, how is everyone doing? I’m somehow on target (though I haven’t yet started my writing for today) fingers crossed it stays that way.

I know that a big question I’ve seen floating around is “How do you find time?” It’s a good question for sure and it’s something that can be hard. I have a full time day job, plus keeping up with cooking, housework, time with my significant other and of course must find time to read as well!

Carving out specific writing time is something you have to do consciously. Unfortunately, when you have so many obligations it has to be done. I go to bed a few hours later than my significant other, so that is definitely time that is being earmarked for writing.

I also try/plan to do more than the daily average on my days off, to make up for those work days that I don’t quite hit it. As long as I write something every day, I will consider that a good step.

Current word total: 3400 words.

Happy writing, everyone!

Happy Halloween & Eve of NaNoWriMo

Happy Halloween! I hope all of you had a great day full of spooky stuff while also staying safe.

Now, is everyone ready for NaNoWriMo? I could technically start in a few hours, but I’m not sure if I’ll be staying up past midnight. The days of me pulling all-nighters have long passed. Still, I imagine I’ll set aside a good chunk of time tomorrow to really get a good start. I feel like solid beginning will give me motivation and a platform to stand on.

Those of you doing Preptober – how did it go? What do you have prepped? I have now selected what I’ll actually be working on and have a good number of notes – so fingers crossed!

Good luck everyone!
